Guangming Xu

Guangming Xu is an award winning journalist-turned-communications expert. With over 20 years experience in the Chinese media industry, he has a deep understanding of who’s who and what’s hot, and how to secure and exploit media opportunities in the region.

Originally from Yangzhou in south-east China, he has lived and worked in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong, with a career path that spans communication and project management roles in the media, corporate and non-profit sectors, including agency, in-house and freelance PR, for some of the world’s top companies.

After graduating from the prestigious Shanghai Fudan University with a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Literature in 1985, he began his career as a journalist in Beijing and spent the next fifteen years working for print media and TV in China. In 2001, he went to study in the USA, obtaining a Master’s Degree in International Development from Cornell University. Following his return to China two years later, he joined the international NGO, Internews, helping to set up its first China office in Shanghai and develop its programmes that provide professional training to hundreds of Chinese journalists each year. He briefly returned to journalism in 2007, working as researcher for the Shanghai office of the New York Times, but then decided to move into public relations.

As a consultant for Hill & Knowlton in Beijing, he worked on a variety of corporate communications issues including media relations, public affairs and crisis management on behalf of a clientele that included some of the world’s largest corporations, such as PetroChina and Rio Tinto. He has also gained substantial in-house communications experience as Senior Communications Officer for the Hong Kong Institute of Education in Hong Kong, where he provided a lead on PR opportunities and successfully generated stories about its academic achievements into the international and mainland China media.

Mr Xu currently lives in Shanghai with his wife and son. He joined Go East Consulting as a China Communications Consultant in November 2011.
